Dedicated IP Address

Unfortunately, this can and does occur. The location of each IP is governed and determined by databases over which we have no control.

Linux – how to determine if I’m connected or not

Better explanation: with the old client (v74 or something), I found that a pid file was created when the VPN was on and connected. Now I can’t seem to find that file, and I’m trying to find an info that works using the command line. What’s the best way to do this?

Something as simple as

Bonus question: without querying whatsmyip.org or similar sites, how would I get the IP address I’m connected to? There’s probably a file somewhere but again I’m not good enough to find it. Doesn’t matter if I have to use grep or whatever to extract the IP, as long as it’s somewhat consistent and won’t change again in another update.

Dedicated IP Address

There’s probably something I missed in the ToS somewhere about availability and whatnot, but my dedicated IP address is showing connected to my city of choice, and when I look upt public facing IP Addy it shows assigned to the data center in my chosen city, but when I connect to a service that uses my IP to determine my location it’s now showing services in either London or Prague.. It worked flawlessly for about 3 or 4 days when I first got the dedicated IP address and today it just started acting up. . When I enquired to PIA about it this is the response I got.

“Thank you for contacting PIA Support!

I see you’re having issues with the PIA VPN not displaying your precise location while connected.

Unfortunately, this can and does occur. The location of each IP is governed and determined by databases over which we have no control.

Since there are no new internet addresses (IPv4 addresses) available to add more bandwidth to one of our gateways, we have to either add “used” IP addresses or move our existing IPs between locations. When you see this issue, it’s because those geo-IP databases haven’t been updated with the latest information. The IP address is in the area where we list it, but the website you’re talking to doesn’t have a new enough database to know about the change. Because different databases are controlled and updated by multiple independent organizations, the location information may be valid in some but not all places online.

Private Internet Access makes every effort to ensure that our IPs are properly located, but we cannot control, sadly, the speed at which these are updated. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

If it didn’t work from day 1 I might buy this, but with it having worked for even a little bit, I am extremely skeptical.
