KickassTorrents Comes Back Again! This Time As KAT.am

kat is back as kat.am

Short Bytes: KickassTorrents is back again. This time, as KAT.am. It also contains the complete KAT database and user account data. Hosting information is kept a secret behind the walls of Cloudflare.

KAT.am was launched just days after the original Kickass Torrent website went down on 20th July 2016. The website quickly rose to fame after the Kickass Torrents domain was seized and many clone sites emerged. Proving once again that pirate sites can’t be fully shut down. Out of all the clone sites, KAT.am turned out to be the most popular.

KickAss Torrents Shutdown

We have been following the chase between the homeland security department and the KAT family for the past few days. Here is another iteration of KickAss Torrents that have popped up on the internet. KAT.am, with a complete KAT database including user account data, is live now, reports The Verge.

The homeland security department seized KAT’s domains. They also managed to arrest KAT founder Artem Vaulin, aka Tirm, with Facebook and Apple’s help. But, the world’s most-loved torrent website came back as Dxtorrent and kickass torrent.website, which is NOT mirror-backed by IsoHunt, as some reports suggested.

The whole scenario resembles what we see in Indian daily soaps where characters come back from the dead again and again. Jon Snow fans will also find this analogy relatable. KAT.am is the new domain rooting for KickassTorrents’ rebirth. The website is “hosted on different cloud servers to prevent blockade, and the hosting information is well hidden behind Cloudflare,” the creators of KAT.am said in an email to The Verge.

Pirate websites coming back from the dead is not a surprise to our ears. The Pirate Bay has done so in the past. It’s now running buttery smooth with all of its glory and its original .org domain. No matter how many times the security agencies and the copyright holders will try to put a bar on the pirate realm, it looks like it will come again and again. Just like it has done so far.

KickassTorrents is back and we have its community to thank for the rebirth

KickassTorrents, formerly the world’s largest torrent site, has been reborn courtesy of its original keepers.

US federal authorities had taken down the site around July this year, soon after the arrest of the site’s alleged owner, Artem Vaulin.

As with most torrent sites today, KickassTorrents’ (KAT) servers were distributed all over the world, making them almost impossible to take down at once. While the domain names were seized by federal authorities and its owner arrested, the site’s original database of torrents and community remain intact.

TorrentFreak reports that the site’s community, which includes forum admins, moderators and members banded together to rebuild the site. Their efforts are documented on forums at Katcr.co.

The team have finally patched together a site that looks like the original KAT and relaunched it as Katcr.co/New.

Since these admins and moderators don’t appear to have access to KAT’s original codebase, the site isn’t an exact replica of the original site. TorrentFreak points out that the user database is new and that the torrent database isn’t yet complete.

The chance to rebuild the site from scratch has apparently given the team to build a more secure KAT. “In order to keep our members safe we chose to rebuild and keep only safe elements. Despite the fact that a rebuild took longer, the safety of our community comes first,” a community member told TorrentFreak.

Interestingly, the KAT crew seem unconcerned by legal action against the site. They claim that the site follows DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) procedures and that their goal is to maintain KAT as a “community-based forum and a torrent search engine” that doesn’t host unlawful content.

We couldn’t verify that statement for ourselves because the new site appears to be down. A message from the site admin reads, “Servers Load have been affected, there are other few sources of this issue, it’s not just one.”

Whatever else KAT members may claim, however, it’s worth noting that the federal authorities have charged the owner of the site with copyright infringement and seized the original domains for hosting over $1billion worth of copyrighted content.

And who’re we kidding, KAT didn’t become the world’s largest torrent site by sticking to the letter of the law.
